Chimney Swifts Need Our Help
On our hike this week along the Little Tennessee River Greenway, we came across two tall square structures out in a field. These were new since our last hike here and we wondered what they were?
Then, we saw this sign to explain.
Due to the gradual disappearance of suitable chimneys, due to chimney caps and screens, the Swifts populations have suffered.
Many Audubon groups across the country are trying to help them out by building fake chimneys for nesting sites to help these beautiful birds make a comeback. The trail that we were hiking on is in Franklin, NC.
Below is a report from one of the Audubon Chapters.
