YardCrap Bug Block

As Winter kills off the bugs, the birds need protein. They will come to your feeders if you put this out.
Those little store bought suet cakes don't cut it compared to what you can make in 15 minutes.

1 cup lard
2 cup chunky peanut butter
5 cup corn meal

- As you melt lard in a pot, place the peanut butter jar in microwave for easy melting.
- Pour melted peanut butter into pot.
- stir in corn meal until it is mixed completely

Put mix into molds or one bowl for a big block.
Place in fridge for an hour.

This does not need later refrigeration. In a clean covered bowl (I use the buckets lard comes in) it will keep for months. Tupperware type bowls with a tight lid are excellent.
Just cut off a chunk as needed.
I mix large batches in a ten gallon pot about twice a year.

About all birds eat this. It will draw birds to your yard that might not come for seed.
Wood Peckers, Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, Blue Birds, Nut Hatches, Wrens, etc love it. It serves as an insect replacement.
I find that only Gold Finch and Sparrows don't care much for it.

You can mix in things like freeze dried worms or shelled sunflower. Don't add seeds as those are hard enough to crack without you making them oily.
