I am tipping the scales at "Toy" levels and my Bride has gained and ounce or two.:calm:
The damn New Years Resolutions thing reared it's ugly head and so "we" are reducing ---> yet again!:disillusionment:

I have a world class treadmill, not one of those fold up toys. I jog on it and play tunes on my turntable. It is nice in the RedNeck Bar.

The Bride needs video, and I could not get the tuner going for the 24" monitor there. I got pissed and bought her a TV.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o01_s00_i00

In no time we are going to look like we did in the 70's.:congratulatory:

I like music videos and have an increasing library of them. Years back I found they are fun on the treadmill. Movies work for the Bride, but on the treadmll they annoy me.

Today Kid Rock had me working hard.
This is a good TV if anyone is in the market. I actually got it on sale from Amazon for $50 less.

I was out with Christmas shopping in mind and found a good item in a second hand store - for me.:congratulatory:

In a salvage store was a Belkin power conditioner new in the blister pack for $25. I snapped it up. I got it hooked in out here on the porch today.

Apparently this sold new new for $180 but is discontinued and bargains can be found.

I don't know actually know how good it might condition the power, but maybe some.:smug:
On the plus side, It looks great, adds a lot of outlets, is very heavy duty, and adds another power surge protector which is handy living on a large flat lake.

You can't get a power strip near this good for the price.
I wish they had had more than one.

From CNET

Shoving all your home theater equipment into a single, closed cabinet makes sense when you want to keep your living room tidy. There's just one problem: overheating.

When you have things like a router, gaming console, cable box, and DVD player all mingling in one cabinet, things can get steamy. So much so, in fact, that a lack of air circulation can eventually fry your equipment. (Ring of death, anyone?)

The most obvious solution here is to remove the door from your media cabinet, but if you're bent on keeping the appearance of your living room clean, the next best thing is to install a cooling fan.

Follow the step-by-step guide and video to install a quiet, temperature-controlled fan that keeps your cabinet cool and your gadgets happy.

In my opinion (not humble) most people writing on the main web sites are better at writing than most, but their expertise on any subject is less. They have to put out a column ever so often to get paid, so I give them a break. At the least, they are sometimes entertaining and make us think.

The heat thing this guy brings up is real. A year ago my Carver 705 put out enough heat to close down my Dish receiver in the cabinet. The TV started saying it was too hot, posted that on the screen. I moved the 705 out side the cabinet and all was well. With a SunFire that would be less problem, but heat is a killer.

Here is his entire article: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-...media-cabinet/

Most audio gear is OK with heat. I got a Bench Mark DAC Pre for my deck ($1500) a couple years ago and the heat coming off was scarey. I contacted Bench Mark and they told me not to worry, it was no big deal and the Bench Mark was made for it. :cower:

In my video cabinet heat closed it all down. Maybe the cabinets are the problem.

I love my Bench Mark, trust the guys as you can just call them and not be switched to some guy in India.

Still, I bought a ParaSound Zbreeze and put over it as I do play this Bench Mark on the deck i Summer when it is way over 100 degrees. After about a year, my review on the Zbreeze is --

- totally quite as in you cannot hear it.
- brings the heat of the Bench Mark down from very hot to room (outdoor) temp.
- has 3 fan speeds, and low is all I need even on the deck on 100+ days.
- the Bench Mark goes from very damn hot to normal. (TNRabbit has a Bench Mark and can tell you how hot it gets).
- if any geeks are reading this, it is just like with the CPU in a computer. If the tiny cheap fan over it fails, the computer will shutdown.

http://www.amazon.com/Parasound-Zbre.../dp/B001RM7BLG

31JplmL87+L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

The Zbreeze is not cheap at about a hundred bucks, but I think this is a bargain if you need something like this. You set it on top of the gear and it is amazing. It just sucks out the heat. It would have been no help in my cabinet, but a cheap small fan would have solved that.

Fans move air and that causes noise we don't want. After over a year, cannot say enough about the Zbreeze if you ever need something like this.

I know most will never need this, but WTF?, I try to share experiences as do all of you.

Great Sounding, Affordable Speakers

This article is about great sounding 5.1 but as usual for SG, a muddled mess. :watermelon:
Still it is fun as opposed to nothing to read.
Somebody has to write something or there will be nothing for the masses to snipe at with their "one liners". :peaceful:

================

The Audiophiliac
Mission impossible: Design great-sounding, affordable speakers
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57...able-speakers/

==========================
AgentOrange experience on the subject: :afro:

"Affordable" means different things to different people, as does "great sounding". A 5.1 system for under $500 would be limited, but if you buy used like I do, maybe not too much.
A good way to get great sound from smaller speakers is a set up like I have at the bed room TV. Def Teck ProMonitor 1000 speakers and a matching Def Teck sub.
You can get a new pair on ebay right now for $364 and a matching sub for $379. That makes an excellent system for a small room at under $700, and less if you buy used like I do. You could add more speakers for 5.1 as the budget allows. I started with the Audioengine AP4 in there, then the Polk VM 20 (very good for TV) but these sound much better. The right sub is the key. I got my speaker stands for $99, a real steal as they are the perfect height for my ears in my waterbed.

Good sound also is related to things other than speakers. I use a vintage Carver 400T amp I got for $200 (200wattsX2) and a Grant Fidelity DAC/Pre which is a steal new at $350, especially if you like to roll tubes. I use an old computer as the server for movies and some tunes.

This system is not as good as at my big TV, and of course nothing like what TnRabbit has set up which must be incredible (but not "affordable" for most).
Too be honest, it hurts my feelings if I have to buy audio gear new as the mark down on used is tremendous. :topsy_turvy:
