I grew up with Country Music. It was AM radio at it's best at my place. It was not a choice of mine. It was every where in my environment, it could not be escaped. Because of that, I learned the words to tunes as a tot (thanks Sister).

In High School I drifted to Southern Soul. Guys like The Tams, Maurice Williams, and Sam Cook were moving me. James Brown was exceptional and doing something in no category. Even then, guys like Eddy Arnold were on my playlist. College brought Motown and also Roger Miller. Diana was ringing my heart out and Roger was making me think. I also hooked into a love for Jazz then that I have never been able to shake. Hard to come by $$ was going to any Getz album in 1966.

In the Army while in Germany, got reacquainted with Country as guys like George Jones and Ray Price came on my deck. Charlie Pride sold me all his albums there. Also on deck came two life favorites, Percy Sledge and Otis Redding. It was then I discovered Southern Soul and Country were the same tunes. The beat was different. If there is a better Country/Soul/WTF singer than Percy Sledge, I have yet to hear him.

70-73 was Hippie. Too much to go into here. Real hippies were not big band Rock. It was the end of the age, and ass holes were growing long hair. It took a trained eye to tell the real from the bad.

In the 70's bigger ROCK was taking off. Metal was big. It was not hitting me. I was working several jobs a day, little time for TV or tunes. That was the time I spent any music money on Loretta and Conway. It was years before I went back and picked up Fleetwood, Van Halen, and WTF? Who needed that Crap if you had Loretta?

Then, OUTLAW Country hit. It hit me hard. Waylon, Willie, Kris, David Allen, Merle, --!
They were angry, disrespectful, and by nature Southern. At the time I was struggling to keep my head above water. It was MY music.

Since then there have been many great tunes and artists, but the wave was over for me.
To come would be life favorites like Strait, Travis, Anderson, and Yoakam, but real Country was in decline as the fan base was changing.

Johnny Cash was asked, "who is the greatest country music singer?" He replied, "you mean other than George Jones".
IMO, he's the only person that 'comes close' to Hank Williams in singing country music.
"If we all could sound like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones," Waylon Jennings once sang.
Years ago, when Greg (see earlier posts) and I used to have Saturday night 'all nighters' ; invite about 15 or 20 guests, we would always play some George Jones songs. One of the songs that we would play was "Still Doing Time" and our friend Brad thought the world of George Jones; but when we play "Still Doing Time" he would leave because it affected him so much (believe it or not -- he would actually cry). He was the only singer I ever listen to that had such an effect on listeners.
Later, when 'da huss' and I was doing the 'honky-tonk' scene in Charlotte and I was in the 'dog house'; I would have the band to play some 'Jones". Presto! we were back on the dance floor; forgiven -- but, of course, not forgotten.:love_heart:
It's 'beer-thirty' -- I'm agonna play some 'Jones' out of respect for the 'possum. Hell, I'm agonna play him all day. A sad, sad day......
Would not be a good day to fuck with ole Sundance. One of my heroes is gone.....

Overcast day, rather cool at 67.
I am on the porch playing a CD I got in from ED yesterday.
It is a mix of this and that, very good choices:saturn:.

So, as it plays, randomly picking a few to send back. I know Ed's choice in tunes as we are both geezers. I am trying to pick some he may not have or maybe has not heard in a couple years. Good fun!! Picked a couple and ended with 68. I'll try to cull a few, or not.
It costs about a dime to make a CD and $2.07 to mail one. You can mail more than one for the same price.

Funny, picking from this or that artist was easy, but when I hit the INK SPOTS, wanted to include them all. It must be the mood of this cloudy dark day.

This was tune all young boys cried in bed with as the transistor radio played.
Connie Stevens was a drop dead good looking blond singer and actor.
She is also a life long conservative, very rare in Hollywood.
DALLAS (AP) -- Advance bids for a copy of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album autographed by all four band members are even higher than the auction house anticipated.
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions said Friday that bidding for the 1967 album has reached $110,500 and could surpass $150,000 by the March 30 auction. Heritage originally estimated the album would go for around $30,000.

The Beatles signed the album on the gatefold above the pictures of their heads.

The auction company's consignment director, Garry Shrum, says there's no telling when an autograph of such quality will show up again and "people are responding to that."
Shrum says the bidding seems to have "taken on a life of its own."
Bids started at $15,000 and include the buyer's premium.

If you'd enjoy some new music recorded very well, here is a label I'd suggest looking at. They have become on of my favorites. Only redbook available.

Clarity was a company out of San Francisco in about the early to mid 90's. Seems it didn't last too many years. But the technique used was all high end and a simple chain. They also had a certain approach to the way they produced the discs and handled the digital data. Kind of ahead of their time.

The music largely is jazz oriented but some releases were into classical and a few into other areas. If you'd enjoy jazz with a pop punch, try this...

Secret Island.jpg

Secret Island is not background music. A great redo of a Stevie Wonder song is a highlight for me. A couple copies for about $6.50 delivered on Amazon right now.

If you want a nice cross section of the Clarity quality and music, they have a couple samplers. Here is one...

Clarity Collection.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/Clarity-Record...larity+records

A couple copies there to your door less than $5! The image on the upper part of that cover is one of my big favorites, Chico Freeman. A fabulous sax jazz release with a African beat influence due to his having spent time touring in Africa before going into the studio for that album. Chico here...

http://www.amazon.com/Emissary-Chico...larity+records

Watch out for a fraud re-release company called Arkivmusic. I wound up with one of their "authorized" releases which is a 100% copy of the cover and the disc. So the outside said it was a "Gold" version, which it wasn't. Even the printing on the CD itself said the same and it wasn't. I'd also suspect that the way Clarity pressed the CD wasn't followed. Somebody should either sue that company or better yet, find the company head and kick his ass for being an ass and a lie.

Another pair that are real good are the Hot Club of San Francisco releases. I think I stumbled into the Clarity label on one of these, picked up at a used CD store while I was on the road. Found myself shopping music and picked it up on a lark and discovered one of my favorite, if small labels. They did release at least some vinyl, though the ones I've seen went for into the couple hundred $ neighborhood.

I would hope that if anybody takes a leap and tries any of these that they'd enjoy them as much as I have! Good stuff to me!

Just sprung for the DSOTM "Immersion" set. 43% off via www.popmarket.com 24 hour daily "sale" deal. It comes with six discs including re-mastered...blah-blah CD, Bluray and regular DVD "never before seen" concert and studio stuff, PLUS a "virgin vinyl" DSOTM LP (not to mention a 36 page booklet and THREE "Dark Side of the Moon" MARBLES in a draw string bag!!). Not sure if the LP is "re-mastered...blah-blah" or the original mix. But I'm most looking forward to the 5.1 DVD version of the complete album, especially after my experience with this format for the Beatles music re their Mini-Documentaries DVD. Can't wait!

Also a great oppurtunity to compare the "virgin vinyl" analog LP sound to the CD (through my new PS Audio DLIII DAC!). Answer this "digital vs analog" debate once and for all....:encouragement::excitement::indecisiveness: :cower:. Right...'bout that..:jaded:. OTOH, any of you TT/analog freaks want to buy just this (unopened) LP from this package deal? At most, I'd probably just listen to it once on LP, then it will just sit there in my (abandoned) LP shelf...until the day I die and some lucky garage sale nerd scores it for a couple of bucks! :excitement:

This DVD comes with the big re-mastered set of all their albums that came out in '09. I JUST now finally got around to viewing/listening to it today! Great! A great way to see how they evolved as each album has its own little documentary... With this viewing I have to say that they are the best pop band of all time (for whatever reason). SOME of their music will last forever...IMO. Would I want a steady diet of their music? No, not at all. All the rest of the period music is priceless as well.... But to pick just one group, they get my vote. Great DVD........and played thru my new SS system with the m1.0t mkII opt2 on the "fronts" is simply heavenly.... 'most makes me want to try a little hit of grass, just to see if it could be even better ("someone" scored a tiny little vial of buds for nothing....dare I?:biggrin-new:).
