I hate them. I like the ones done as fun, but hate the official ones. Teams are rated by potential, not reality. The first real polls should not come out until maybe 4 weeks into the season. Pre-season polls have great impact on College football, and not a good impact.

Once you are in, you are in. Falling out takes time and getting in can be impossible. The same teams are rated high each year.

For example, lets say in the first game, Alabama is ranked #1 and VT is out of the top 25. Alabama looses. Do you think the following week VT will be ranked ahead of Alabama, or even in the the top ten? Do you think Alabama will fall out of the top ten? In both cases -->NO!
Last year USC was ranked #1 and it took them most of the season to fall out of the top 25.

I like the fun pre-season lists that mean nothing. There will be many. One top site, ATHLON Sports has been counting theirs down each week.:friendly_wink: This week they have LOUISVILLE in at #10, ahead of #11 Boise. This is a joke also. It is fun on their site, but they try to mimic the real polls which will put up close to the same order. It is not funny then. Those two teams are ranked ahead of teams like LSU, FLORIDA, Michigan, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, etc. Are they as good as those teams? I don't know, no one does. What I know is they are ranked high because they only play cup cake teams this year who had loosing records last year. They are ranked high because they are likely to win a lot, even go undefeated. Woud they go undefeated in the conferences of the teams listed behind them - HELL NO! When the season gets started, both teams will rise in the polls as they win against cupcakes and teams ahead of them play each other and "EARN" a loss. Soon actual Top Ten teams will fall behind those two. Teams behind will never be able to catch up as most have a tough schedule and will see a loss here and there.

Pre-season polls are harmful. All polls that don't take into account "strength of schedule" are not accurate and are harmful. It costs us fans. Why would a team schedule to play real teams when a win is a win and a loss cost $$$$? Just look at the first week (or any week) of schedules and all the pointless match ups done to insure a win, not a contest.

Preseason assessments are usually wrong. Teams that should do well don't and every year surprises show up.

The ACC divisions from last season:
ATLANTIC CONF/OVR
Florida State 7-1 12-2
Clemson 7-1 11-2
North Carolina St 4-4 7-6
Wake Forest 3-5 5-7
Maryland 2-6 4-8
Boston College 1-7 2-10

COASTAL CONF/OVR
North Carolina 5-3 8-4
Miami (FL) 5-3 7-5
Georgia Tech 5-3 7-7
Virginia Tech 4-4 7-6
Duke 3-5 6-7
Virginia 2-6 4-8

Starting with the COASTAL:
On paper there are 3 teams with top talent - Miami, UNC, and VT.

Miami looks the strongest, but has to play Fla St while UNC and VT get a schedule break. None of them have to play Clemson. Miami has to travel to UNC. UNC travels to VT. Miami plays at UNC. VT travels to Miami. Overall, the looser in conference schedule would appear to be Miami.

UNC plays at VT and at GT.
VT plays at Miami and at GT.
Miami plays Fla State and at UNC.

So, pre season you could say UNC will not be the favorite in 1 game, Miami in 2 games and VT in 1 game. Throw in a tough game at GT and things even out a little. I mention GT as they are the spoiler, no one wants to play there.

So, on paper, the three top guys look similiar as to schedule toughness. On the national scene, each plays one top ten type SEC team.

Last season, UNC had tons of Offense and no Defense. Few teams send as many guys to the NFL. They have the meat, just never a team. I think last season they averaged over 40 points a game. That Offense will be back. One would tend to think the Defense would be improved as it could not be worse. (case in point, UNC put up 50 on GT, but lost 68-50.) So, same great Offense, better Defense means this should be an improved team. I believe we can give them 8 wins. The struggle will be to add to that by beating USuCk(not likely), VT(not likely) Miami and GT. The spoiler game could be the rival game at NCST. UNC always has talent and always fails to play to potential, so I am giving them 8-4 this year.

The wheels fell off VT last year. Even with the top rated QB, they were unable to score points. As a rule, VT has less talent that UNC or Miami, but in recent years has fielded a solid team. 10 wins is common there. Was last year a hiccup or the start of a slide? Coach Beemer lost 40 pounds. In the off season, Beemer made changes. I think they will OK. They too seem to be looking at 8 sure wins. They get Alabama and UNC at home. They travel to GT and Miami. They don't get Miami until Nov, so the team will have time to become a team. It is easy to see them finishing 11-1 on paper. That is a big jump from 7-6, don't think they will do that with a new QB and a new offense. I am going 9-3 only because I am a VT fan.

Miami has top ten talent. They have that every year. Every year they squander it. The new coach has setttled the team and there were fewer arrests last year. I don't see them beating Florida, Fla St, UNC, or GT. Only DUKE has less as to home field advantage. I'll be generous and give them 7-5, and hoping they go 5-7.

It looks to me the Coastal champs could be tied up like last year. To that end, see VT having the tie breaker by beating UNC at home and Miami on the road.

Will GT find some Defense this year? They now run the triple option to perfection, but it works less as teams have adjusted to defend it. The trick seems to be to get a lead and make them pass more. In my opinion, they are the joker in the Coastal race. I don't see them winning, but who they beat and loose to could decide it.

Next up, the Atlantic Division.

Up front I will admit that I don't keep up with college football; or as some call it "Semi-Pro Football". It's not up to the old USFL or AFL , etc. standards; but it's entertaining to a lot of college fans. The players do not make as much money as the USFL or AFL used to make, but they are making progress.
For example:
South Carolina will be home team for ’15 matchup with North Carolina in Charlotte
By Jonathan Jones
jjones@charlotteobserver.com
A white North Carolina football helmet placed on a table at Bank of America Stadium was replaced by a blue helmet on Thursday morning.

Just before a press conference formally announcing the 2015 season-opener between UNC and South Carolina, the two schools’ athletics directors flipped a coin to see which school would be the home team.

South Carolina won the toss, and the teams expect to play in front of a sell-out crowd at Bank of America Stadium on Sept. 5, 2015 when the rivals face each other for just the fourth time since 1991.

“It’s obviously a very, very difficult schedule having played Clemson on an annual basis and adding this game to the schedule,” South Carolina AD Ray Tanner said. “But I also think it’s fair to say in the best interest of all the schools, going forward with the football championship playoff, that your strength of schedule will play a major factor if you have an opportunity at the end of the year. And adding the Tar Heels will only strengthen our schedule and will be a tremendous enhancement for both of our schedules."

Both the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks will make 'millions' from the game. Hell, they may be able to give their 'student athletes' a raise.:semi-twins:

Unless it's Alabama or Auburn and maybe LSU, or occasionally watching the SEC play for the BCS championship, I usually don't waste 2 or 3 hrs. of my Saturdays watching "Semi-Pro Football."
But, AO loves his college football and this will give him another opportunity to be a fan of the Tar Heels and; who knows Carolina might win against the Cocks and AO can buy another Tar Heel souvenir to go with his collection.:beaten: Also, he could use the Tar Heel win as a tool to beat his Gamecock friends over the head with, "see, see, y'all can't even beat Carolina."

You're welcome; no thanks needed......

College Football Explained

$$ has always been a problem for college football. It is not a pro sport, but the money is tremendous. For the last 50 years or so, you need money...

$$ has always been a problem for college football. It is not a pro sport, but the money is tremendous. For the last 50 years or so, you need money to win. That has led to incredible events on the moral, ethical, and legal side. The governing body (NCAA) is a joke.

The players are mostly 18-22 year old kids. They are the amateur side of things. Everything else is as professional as it gets.

Schools rake in multimillions. Coaches rake in millions. To keep the $$ coming in, rules are bent and often broken. A top player can mean many $$ for a college and mean the difference in a coach keeping his job, getting fired, or getting a big raise.

This has been the case for decades, but now TV money is the ruling god.

Occasionally the stars align and a normal school wins big. 99% of the time, the schools with the deep pockets win. Success breeds success ($$)

For all practical purposes, the SEC has partnered with ESPN and a great conference will become even more elite. For the past few years, ESPN has pushed SEC ball on all its daily programs. The result is more money for ESPN and more money for the SEC. Going forward, the $$ chasm widens and that puts them mostly out of reach. Only a few of the bigger schools with big TV money in place will have any shot at them. (Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, USC, etc)

Clemson pioneered fan donation decades ago with IPTAY (I pay ten a year). The success of that gave a small school like Clemson $$. All schools have copied that, and of course it is now not about giving just $10:distress:.

Today, there is no way fan money can cover TV money the big players receive. Butts in the seats just are not enough, no matter how high they raise the price of admission. Times have changed.

Going into 2013, Clemson will be a pre-season top 10 or 15 team in all polls. That is a combination of $$ and the stars aligning. Unlike the big schools who are there every year, Clemson rarely reaches this level.
Two SEC schools just down the road from Clemson are SC and Georgia, both will be ranked top 10 in pre-season polls.

To be a top program, you need the coaches, and you must have top players. Unlike in the NFL, there is no draft, it is an uncontrolled free for all. To get the top players, you can cheat (happens all the time) or you can constantly expand what you have to offer players.
Top players want to go the NFL. They want exposure. They also want top facilities.
To keep up in today's market, schools need millions of dollars to spend on these guys. Most schools just don't have that, and so they seldom get the better talent.

Clemson has some money, more than many schools as their fans are rabid. They don't have as much as the two rivals listed (GA SC) above that they play. With the new ESPN TV deal, both these schools will rake in over a hundred million dollars MORE than the Clemson/ACC TV deal. You can't compete with that huge disparity:gorilla:.

To put things into perspective, think about Wendell Scott, a very good NASCAR driver. He is famous for being in the sport and being Black. He should be famous for being in the sport and fielding a car with few funds. He could not do that in today's NASCAR, anymore than a college football program without comparable $$ can field a top 25 team. Money talks and has a loud voice.

It is not all doom and gloom. Occasionally the stars will align like last year when Clemson beat Auburn and LSU. Also, On any Fall weekend, teams with less will be playing teams with less, and that makes for damn good football.:excitement::excitement: Bandwagon fans will be jumping their sorry ass around to the hot team of the year, but real fans will be cheering or crying in their beer as they been for over a 100 years.

College Football is the best, you just need to have a program to explain WTF is going on.

No need to thank me.

NASCAR sold out
Waldo is right about that.
They are "professional" as in entertainment like the popular Reality TV shows. Girls with bigger hooters than Danica are on the horizon.

Boxing and even College Football do that now.

I don't give a big crap about most, but ?

College sports WERE about student athletes in the vintage days. Even then, coaches and colleges gave the best of those guys cars and other perks to join their team.

Nothing has changed except that now a kid needs a lawyer to be recruited and prosper.

The NCAA is a joke and this year is folding in on it self as to Miami just like with Cam at Auburn. The NCAA holds off any judgement until the results as to $$ are examined. They are a joke and they are criminals.

College Football generates incredible money these days. In every state coaches are the highest paid state employees in the state. Nothing against the coaches as they earn their keep, unlike the politicians.

We will never go back to student-athletes - too much $$$ involved.

What is the best way forward?

Pre-season polls are coming out and as usual they are all over the board. Guys who make a living at this have to do it, and they have to pump up the big reader lists with the perennial fan favorites like Notre Dame to sell copy. Last year they were all on with USC as #1 - idiots!
In all true polls, schedule means a lot. It is not a list of the best teams, but the teams with best chance of winning games. In my opinion, he two best teams last year were Alabama and Georgia. Give Georgia the schedule ND played and they would have been undefeated.

This year USuck gets a schedule break. If Spurrier is going to make a run, it has to be this year.

Polls right now mean less than nothing, but they are fun.:torn:

Clemson seems to be just out of the top ten in most which is a lot better than last year. Clemson personnel will not be improved loosing Ellington and Hopkins, but the guys left behind will be a year older, and the system is improving as the guys learn it. With no running back and the top wide out gone, things should look bleak, but I see a fun year ahead.:smug: Clemson plays 3 pre season top ten SEC teams, so the schedule is a killer, and an opportunity. If we win, we will be invited to the party.

Alabama tops most polls which is appropriate. They lost some guys, but they don't care.
Sanford is up there for a change, but see they are having some QB problems, so they might fall.
Texas A&M is the darling due to Johnny Football, but I suspect they will not repeat as top ten. That is tough to do.
When the real polls come out, I think Ohio State is the gorilla in the room. Where will they go?

Things change a lot in one year of college football as we are talking teenagers here. Will Texas not "finish" a top ten team this year? I would not bet on that, but all the experts are.

A made or missed play here and there is the difference every year in it all.
The Polls are fun, but not much more at this point. Last preseason ND was not top 25, but made it to the big game.

The 2013 Football season will kick off with a classic.
Two neighbor schools are both coming off a great season and both packed with high aspirations.
I was there when Ga last came to Clemson and it was hard to take.:grumpy: This game looks to me like a nail biter. Both teams have solid offense returning, and it looks like the defense will be more even as Ga lost a few to the NFL.

The Ga AD put out yesterday he would like to see it moved to Monday, but I don't see that happening. I like the idea though.

Fans all over Georgia and SC will be slowly working toward a frenzy over the next few months. Things will be at a boil by September.
I live right on the SC-GA border -> The Tugaloo River.

Good article today about the long term cheating at UNC. This "investigation" has been going on for a year now - NOT!!!!
In fact the good old boy network of UNC grads that run the state of NC have been artfully keeping most of it under wraps.

This is the biggest case of fraud in college athletes of all time and the NCAA is afraid not to look the other way.Be sure to read the comments from locals.

The schedule is not yet out, but we know the opponents.

Before 2012 most of us armchair experts saw Clemson as sliding back a notch from the great 2011 season. We hoped for a win over USuCk.

The Clemson guys overcame line weakness and improved as no could have predicted. By the last game of the year against LSU, they were as good as it gets. They were tough, an adjective lacking in the last few Clemson teams.

For 2013 the expectations are high. Last year expectations were 8-4 but this year, any loss will be hard to take.
Is this a better team? Yes it is, or at least it should be. The loss of Hopkins is very hard. (all Clemson fans wish him the best) Watkins was mostly silent in 2012 so I suspect he will roar back like a -- TIGER in 2013 to fill the gap.

At the start of 2012 the "D" was shaky, but not at the end of the season. In 2013 they will be improved in every area.

I am a fan, but not just being "Pollyanna" as all the fun 2013 polls coming out by "experts" no better at predicting than you are me have Clemson top ten.

I don't see a glaring weakness. I do wonder who will step up and run the ball with success, but it is not like the cupboard is bare. On offense, Clemson will score - !!:triumphant:

The schedule is hard. Last year Clemson started with an undefeated top ten Auburn team. It was a big win, but then everybody beat Auburn. This year Clemson starts with a great Georgia team that will be ranked top 5. Georgia will not be folding up like Auburn did, win or loose. Georgia expects to win the National Championship in 2013, and why not? They were just a few yards from beating Alabama and facing the overrated Notre Dame team this year. All the parts of the Georgia team will be back, a year older, stronger, and better. We often forget these are 18-23 year old kids improving in every way -> quickly.

We also play USuck at Columbia and Florida State. The other ACC teams Clemson plays will be improved. Ga Tech just went out and crushed the pre season #1 of last year -> USC. Experts can't call it.

I believe this will be a year Clemson can win any game. Will they? Most likely not as undefeated seasons are rare - none occurred in 2012 or 2011.

Life is good in Upstate SC. I live 20 minutes from the real "Death Valley".

I will be at the game.

AO, Kingman and I have been having some fun with the "college game of the week " football pool. Don just joined the party today. So AO thought it would be a good idea to start a "NFL playoff " pool. We will play this all the way to the Super Bowl. If we get a clear winner (no ties) he will get a pair of GE triple mica grey plate 5751 vacuum tubes. These tubes can be used in place of 12AX7 because they are basically a military version of the 12AX7 with slightly lower gain. Also the winner BETTER use these babies! ;) Ok here are the games!

Texas vs Cincinnati

Minnesota vs Green Bay

Indianapolis vs Baltimore

Seattle vs Washington

Good luck everybody!!! Wayne no cheating!!! :glee:

Big week for us locals.

Miami has declined to go to a Bowl to punish themselves for years of cheating. How lame is that? They are telling the NCAA, let us lie in rags and ashes as we truly repent. They got caught - pure and simple. That puts a 6 win Ga Tech team into the ACC Championship game and makes the ACC look like the asshole it is. I hope GT wins and goes to the Orange Bowl to show how stupid the system is.

Maryland bolted to the Big Ten. Maryland is a looser as to athletics. This past year cancelled 6 sports to save money. It is a basketball school. The Big Ten now gets the TV market, but they have to also take Maryland:joyous:.

No one will miss Maryland, but all the locals I know admire them for having the courage to get out of the shadow of the ACC where all the power is in NC. This is a conference run by basketball. Now the ACC will take in UCon or Louisville. My fear is that Fla State will now bolt and leave Clemson here alone.

Due to the driving force $TV$$, Clemson has nothing to offer the SEC and damn, I would hate it if we joined the Big 12. Clemson is kinda stuck. Look at this year, we are 10-1 and ranked behind schools that are 9-2 because of the ACC. Florida State is a powerhouse this year and is also ignored in the polls.

The biggest news of the day is still ignored by media and more importantly by the NCAA -> years of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill approved cheating. I will have a blog post about this soon. Apparently, according to a professor who was forced to "shut up or get out", this goes back even to the to the Dean Smith days where all the "students" graduated. It is bigger story than the cheating they are on probation for now and can not go to a bowl. It is bigger than the cheating at USC, Miami, South Carolina, and Ohio State combined.
I think it is too big for the NCAA to get into as they are the most inept, corrupt group on the face of the Earth.

I try to stay neutral.:concern:

This is a hard/very fun week for guys like me. All over SC people decorate like it was Halloween or Christmas.
The only decent thing I can think of about USuCk is that they have good fans. (90% of colleges don't have that fan base). Sure, people (not fans) pile on the band wagon when the local team wins a couple, but USuCk fans have been solid through a hundred years of loosing. They are used to leaving by half time, but they do show up and give $$. I hate them, but respect them. In this area, only two teams have real fans and both are in South Carolina.

Don't get me wrong, I hope all the USuCk idiots die a horrible slow death and end up in hell with just chicken beaks to eat:smile-new:.

As harsh as that sounds, no "chicken fans" were offended, so if you don't get it, don't comment.

I am SOLID ORANGE. (note my screen names)
At the start of the season if the football god gave me a choice of:

Clemson finishes 11-1 looses to USuCk or goes 1-11 and beats USuCk, I would only be happy with the latter.

Fans don't get that now, and more importantly, most players and coaches don't as many come from outside the state. You have to be born here and live it all your life to understand. For real CLEMSON-usc fans, it is do or die this week.

Clemson has dominated over the many years of this rivalry. In fact, until the last 3, it was just Clemson winning.
This year is really special as both Clemson and the cocks (what kind of name is that?) have a top ten team. USuCk has more defense and Clemson has more offense. I see this as the last year for the near future where the chickens have any chance of a win.

The game is at Death Valley and is at night. By then all the fans will be drunk and loud. The last time in a night game here the "chicken cursed" went in loud and chanting :hopelessness::confused-new:-- came out silent. Being a true Southern Gentlemen, we did not rub it in:very_drunk::tears_of_joy::smiley_simmons:.

The favorite game I have seen in person was here when a teams fight erupted and Chad Jasmine ripped off a "chicken" helmet and through it into the stands. Both teams were bowl banned that year.

We used to play on T-day (called "BIG THURSDAY"), but when the Clemson Army Cadets surrounded the cocks with rifles and live ammo, they banned the annual game. The wimps in Columbia could not take a joke, felt threatened and "snitched". They have no backbone and that is why they have overwhelmingly lost in this competition most times in history.
Under ego-maniac Spurrier, they have won lately as Clemson regrouped after Bowden. Now we are more even. They have the stronger defense. We are hoping for a score in the 40's and to make it a track meet.

I will be honest, it is hard for me to breathe this week. It is the same for true cock fans.

10 Texas A&M 9-2
11 Stanford 9-2
12 South Carolina 9-2
13 Oklahoma 8-2
14 Nebraska 9-2
15 Texas 8-2
16 UCLA 9-2
17 Oregon State 8-2
18 Louisville 9-1
19 Rutgers 9-1
20 Michigan 8-3

Clemson is #9 in the USA Today Poll. Lots of polls out there, and most don't count.
In the top ten, few are safe. Most have tough games ahead. LSU looks safe. They could still jump over Florida and Georgia for the Sugar Bowl as Florida has Florida State to play and Georgia has Ga Tech and Alabama to play. In reverse, Alabama has Auburn and Georgia. The SEC Championship is now the gorilla in the room.

The second slot belongs to ND if they beat USC which will not be easy. Florida State with a good outing against Florida could get in ahead of Oregon if ND looses, and that could happen. It might benefit Clemson if Oregon makes it to the Rose Bowl.

The Fiesta Bowl will likely not take a 11-1 Clemson, so the best shot remains the Sugar Bowl. Odds right now would probably show Florida or LSU getting there as the opponent.

Other wise, Clemson falls to the Chic-Fil-La Peach Bowl. The Peach Bowl is committed to the looser of the ACC Championship game, but there is a clause if they stink, Clemson could be taken. Given that the choices would be Miami or Ga Tech, Clemson would get it as neither of those schools travel, (for Ga Tech, it is just 10 miles).
The opponent there would be LSU, Ga, or Florida depending on how they finish up. They would like to get USuCk, but are unlikely to replay next week's game between Clemson and USuCk.

The big looser is Ohio cheating State.:cheerful: They are undefeated and are missing out even though they are undefeated. The assholes deserve this. I hope they beat Michigan next week so it hurts them even more.
