Feed Peanuts

Birds like peanuts. I find that strange since they grow under the ground and not a normal food for birds.
Over the years I have fed them peanuts, and finally worked out how to do it better.:applause:

The peanuts sold for birds are expensive and pure dried up crap. Don't buy those.

Peanuts in the shell are good. Birds don't handle them well and they tend to be a waste of $$. The Brown Thrasher and Blue Jay can handle these.
For a time I bought these bulk and crushed them before putting them in the tray feeder.

Then I ran across these at Amazon:

They are cheap, excellent, and I eat them too.:fat:

Still, birds take a nut to the tree limb, peck it a couple times, it falls, and they return for another. This is too $$.:offended:

Enter this $12 gadget I picked up around Christmas:

This grinds them to a perfect size. The birds are on these with glee, especially the Nut Hatches and Chickadees. Nothing is wasted.
I use these inexpensive deck rail bird feeders (some have been given as prizes here on YC) and bring them in each night when I collect the cats.
The nuts are not wasted and a bag of the above will last for months.

I have four trays lined up with dried worms, shelled sunflower, millet, and crushed peanuts.
The peanuts get the most action -- by far.

If you are really into feeding and attracting birds, I recommend this set up both as an attractant and a $$ saver.
