I think Max needs a friend, not a large breed dog. I want Max to know he is still my guardian, but a smaller breed that will play with Max and be comfy with cats, and the cats comfy with him. Two of Max's size would scare them. Have been looking at the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - anyone with knowledge on the breed. I don't want a jumping jack or a nipper.

You forgot to add "stubborn" & "escape artist"

As an added bonus, it would herd the cats...

I have looked into that breed. Nice. But will they get along with other dogs? No too clear on that...

Hard to beat a BEAGLE.

Another I am interested in is Shiba Inu.

Aren't beagles noisy? I mean all the time? I don't want noisy.

Nope.
They bark when someone comes up (good thing) and will howl when on the trail.
Otherwise, no more noise than any dog.
If left outside at night, they might object.

Good to know, Thanks. I don't leave my kids outside all night and should, but would never leave my dog outside!
