'maters are my favorite food.

Here are some things to consider:

- maters planted later often do better than than the early plantings.. Ground temps above -65 are ideal planting times.

'maters like a constant wet state to do their best. Dry today and wet tomorrow produces 'maters but under stress.

Down here the plants will produce better early than later. The summer heat will start within a month, and once the high 90's - 100's get here the maters take a licking. I'm hoping this year we'll have more than we can eat!

'maters like all plants strive not to please us but to reproduce. Ideal soil here is 65. It is not about air temp, but soil temp..

Colder climates produce more maters. In the South, we get a big crop in July.
If you do later planting, you can extend the season, but like you posted, Summer heat is not what they like. 'maters do not produce in my yard when temps go over a hundred, but I like that so fuck the maters.

You can peel off the suckers in Spring and plant those with success to extend the season. I do it every year . Still, in the Fall we end up with the green tomatoes they made that movie around. Good fun.

Now even back in the woods you can get good looking tomatoes year 'round.:apologetic:

They look the same, even look better than what I/we grow.

Either you like real 'maters or you don't see the need to go there.

Oh yeah!! When I was a kid, my Dad and I would come up from the fields for lunch. I'd stop off at the garden to pick some maters for those sandwiches. Oh man, nothing like those warm tomato's on Wonder Bread with Miracle Whip. Yuuuuummmmm!!! I could eat my weight in those!! And then there was just going out to the garden with a salt shaker, picking and eating those oh so juicy maters! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Ah yes, those were the good old days.

Normally don't plant here until the 2nd week of April as we often get a freeze till then.

I am running out of Sunny spots to plant.

That looks so good. I see you do the same as me with the concrete reinforcement mesh cages. I didn't plant till the first week in May, so you're way ahead of me.

I'm trying tomatoes in several places, and in containers vs planted in the ground. The ones in containers seems to be doing better, and the ones on the boat dock get the most sun, and are where I'll be picking my first tomato. But, it will still be awhile.

Yeah, I don't have the boat in yet. My neighbor is in Ft. Lauderdale this week, and when he gets back, we're putting both our boats in. Come on over any time. I'll be at a good stopping point no matter what I'm doing.
